"All about elusive, ethereal beauty" - 2014 Roagna Barbaresco Pajè VV

Posted by Ian McFadden

Roagna's 2014 Barbaresco Paje VV may very well represent the pinnacle of their stunning 2014 collection.

It's impossible not to dwell on Galloni's quote above. It gets to the core of things. The Pajè VV is haunting.

Last week, we offered the basic Pajè bottling, and today I'm happy to offer its old-vine sibling.

The Pajè VV is sourced from vines that average 60 years of age. Year after year, it's an extraordinary wine, undoubtedly one of the greats of Piedmont.

Pajè VV is defined by grace and delicacy. It's difficult not to be amazed by the wine's subtle complexity and impression of effortlessness.

The 2014 is a compelling example of the elite realm that this wine works in. I visited Roagna last fall, and the entire lineup was dynamite. The Pajè VV was the absolute standout. I haven't tasted a Piedmont wine so intricate and seriously structured while maintaining such weightlessness.

Barbaresco turned out gorgeous wines in 2014. The vintage comes close to delivering everything that we want - verve, clarity, and beautiful terroir imprints. Galloni's summary captures the vintage nicely: "Vibrant, perfumed and beautifully delineated, the 2014s capture the essence of what makes Nebbiolo so compelling."

Luca Roagna is firmly establishing himself as one of the top talents in all of Piedmont. The current level of textural allure, purity, and overall class at this estate is mind-blowing. The 2014 Pajè VV is a testament to the extraordinary level on which they are working.

Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media: "The 2014 Barbaresco Pajè Vecchie Viti captures everything that makes Nebbiolo so seductive. Constantly changing in the glass, the 2014 offers up a striking range of spice, floral and dried fruit character with an expression of weightless power and transparency that only Nebbiolo offers. Readers should expect a delicate Barbaresco. Other wines in this range offer power and/or finesse, but the Pajè Vecchie Viti is all about elusive, ethereal beauty. I especially admire how the wine gains structure and depth with time in bottle."
