"A Barbaresco of understatement and class"
- 2016 Poderi Colla Barbaresco Roncaglie

Posted by Ian McFadden

Poderi Colla came as a revelation to us.

We first tasted them in the 2013 vintage, and the wines were brilliant.

They are classic Barbarescos and Barolos with a profound and subtle complexity that only traditionally made Nebbiolo can achieve.

Today, we're excited to offer Poderi Colla's 2016 Barbaresco Roncaglie for $54.95 per bottle and $49.95 on 4-packs.

Last fall, I traveled through Piedmont, tasting through many 2016s and was blown away. When I returned, I continued to taste the 2016s widely. The 2016 Barbaresco Roncaglie was one of the standouts, and when you factor in the price, it was without peer.

Poderi Colla is a fairly new estate. It was founded in 1994 by Tino Colla and his niece Federica, who is the daughter of the legendary winemaker, Beppe Colla. The crucial guidance of Beppe Colla brings in one of the most insightful and important figures in Piedmont's history.

Beppe Colla was the owner of Prunotto, and along with producing many brilliant bottles at Prunotto in the 60s, 70s, and 80s, Beppe Colla was the first to produce single cru bottlings and was a key figure in creating the appellation rules. For anyone interested in the history of Piedmont, Levi Dalton's I'll Drink To That! interview with Beppe Colla is not to be missed.

The Roncaglie vineyard has been praised for centuries as one of Barbaresco's greatest. Reportedly, Barolo Bussia and Barbaresco Roncaglie were Beppe Colla's favorite sites. Roncaglie has a prime south, southwest exposition.

The 2016 Roncaglie is absolutely stunning. It possesses a beautifully interwoven delicacy and lots of finesse. The Roncaglie flaunts so much that I love about the 2016 vintage: there's great concentration, a coolly energetic backbone, and soaring well-defined aromatics.

I have every expectation that the 2016 will be a stunner in the decades to come. On the 2016 Barbaresco vintage, Antonio writes, "The young 2016 Barbarescos are some of the most compelling young wines I have tasted in twenty years of visiting the region." The Roncaglie drives home how special the vintage is. It's not to be missed.

Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media: "A stellar wine, the 2016 Barbaresco Roncaglie is pretty, delicate and understated to the core. Rose petal, sweet spice, tobacco, mint, anise and sweet red cherry all grace this translucent, super-expressive Barbaresco from Poderi Colla. A Barbaresco of understatement and class, the 2016 is light on its feet, persistent and finely sculpted. Time in the glass brings out the wine's inner sweetness and perfume, but the 2016 also needs time in bottle to be at its best. This is such a gorgeous wine.."
