The Outlier: 2018 François Cotat Sancerre Caillottes

Posted by Joe Salamone

Generally speaking, you'd summarize Cotat's wines as deep, layered, and rich. Caillottes turns this characterization on its head.

We like to think of Caillottes as the outlier in Cotat's lineup. It's also deliciously compelling.

The wine is lithe and linear. With its piercing minerality, Caillottes is the Cotat bottling that you'll want to drink most often.

Most of Cotat's holdings are on Kimmeridgian marl, the same soil as parts of Chablis. Caillottes is a different terroir. Caillottes means “little stones,” a nod to the small pieces of gravel that dominate the limestone soils. The vineyard, just east of Monts Damnes, is planted with 15-year-old vines that produce wines with a focused minerality and a punchy and lean framework. Cotat's Caillottes dazzles with its crystal-clear purity and subtle complexity.

In the Loire, 2018 was a riper vintage. The wines that it produced are grand and powerful. It's a fascinating vintage for Caillottes. Cotat's 2018 Caillottes has a surprising tension and an energetic, talc-like minerality with layers of bright and zesty citrus fruit. These characteristics get folded into a gripping depth and rare intensity.

Caillottes is sought after for its drinkability, purity, and value. Out of Cotat’s lineup, Caillottes is the bottle we reach for the earliest and most often. We created special 4-pack pricing so that you can keep plenty on hand for the warm months ahead.
