Perfectionism: From Vine to Glass
Schott Zwiesel Conterno Sensory Glass

Posted by Ian McFadden

Simply put, Roberto Conterno has produced a wine glass like no other.

Yesterday, we offered Conterno's epic 2013 Monfortino. Today, we continue the weekend of Conterno with his Sensory Glasses.

It's very rare that we do back-to-back offers on a single producer, but it seemed fitting to celebrate the far-reaching perfection of Conterno. He is simply a force of nature and one of the most talented people working in wine today.

Roberto Conterno is the fourth generation to be at the helm of this long-standing benchmark Piedmont estate. Under Roberto’s watch, he’s not only maintained the superlative, world-class quality that put Conterno on the map, but he’s elevated it to an almost logic-defying level. Today, the wines exist on an extremely rarefied plane that’s inhabited by only a few absolute greats.

The explanation is simple: Roberto’s exacting standards focus on perfecting every little detail. The examples are numerous, but to provide a sense of the range, consider the following: he has experimental vineyards where different vine selections are planted to identify the best ones for future use. Roberto also helped to create a custom, one-of-a-kind, surgically precise grape destemmer, as well as a machine that detects minute levels of cork taint and structural flaws in cork to ensure quality once the wine is bottled.

In 2017, Roberto turned his attention to wine glasses. Teaming up with Schott Zwiesel, one of the greatest wine glass manufacturers in the world, Roberto’s creation not only allows wines to show at their best, but to appeal to all of the senses. The result is a glass like no other, uniquely pleasing to the eye and hand while allowing the wine to flourish.

At the store, we've been using a set of Conterno glasses for the past four months and they clearly elevate the overall experience in a big way. A number of people who have bought the glasses as an experiment have come back to order six or twelve more. They're that compelling. There's no getting around the fact that these are expensive glasses. We encourage you to give them a try and see for yourself how extraordinary they are.
