Loire Rarity For The Ages - Revisited:
2018 Pascal Cotat Chavignol Rosé

Posted by Joe Salamone

Pascal Cotat's Rosé is one of the most ageworthy and compelling rosés in existence.

You'll find Pascal Cotat's rosé in the cellars of collectors, and they treat it as a serious wine. It's a wine that is in many ways without peer.

This helps to explain why it's so difficult to find Cotat's Rosé in quantity. Allocations for Pascal Cotat's Rosé are always tight. They are typically handed out in 6-12 bottle quantities. It feels like a major stroke of good luck whenever we land enough to offer.

We first offered Pascal Cotat's 2018 Chavignol Rosé in October. Our parcel just arrived, and a handful of cases remain, which we're happy to offer at $48.95 per bottle.

With age, there is a silky texture and gentle floral notes, but it's the stony minerality that defines old Cotat rosé. It's the terroir that comes to dominate the rosé with a singular minerality. This is what makes Cotat's rosé so exciting.

When it comes to Sancerre, Cotat's village of Chavignol is a very special place. Chavignol is absolutely defined by its terroir - Kimmeridgian marl, the same soil as parts of Chablis - that imbues the wine with tense, saline minerality.

The 2018 rosé is an especially punchy and deeply powerful vintage. The tactile mineral is really gripping in this vintage. The length and overall architecture is formidable.

The way that Cotat's Rosé ages is amazing. We've had bottles with 10 and even 20 years of age that have blown us away. Everything points to the 2018 having a long life ahead of it.
