Hitting the Bull's Eye:
2010 Mignon Brut Nature

Posted by Joe Salamone

“Christophe Mignon might very well be the finest grower in Champagne most people have not heard about” - Antonio Galloni

Mignon came on our radar with his 2006 vintage. He seemed to come from nowhere and have a handle on Meunier like few others do.

As much as we liked Mignon's 2006 and 2008, the 2010 shocked us. Without a doubt, it's his best wine to date.

Mignon nailed the 2010 vintage. The 2010 Brut Nature shows an incredible purity and clarity of expression. The wine has plenty of breadth, but is animated by a lifted elegance and sleek minerality. Antonio Galloni sums it up perfectly: "there is a sense of verticality supported by beams of minerality that is simply compelling. This is the single finest Champagne I have tasted from Christophe Mignon so far."

The Mignon family has been growing vines for five generations in the Vallée de la Marne. He's in the prime Meunier villages of Le Breuil and Festigny, from 40+ year old vines. While Festigny is known for a more pronounced fruit expression, the Meunier from Le Breuil provides acidity and structure.

Meunier is Mignon's specialty. Not many producers working with the grape achieve a comparable level of finesse and detailed precision. The apt comparisons are Prevost and Chartogne-Taillet.

Mignon's under-the-radar status means that the wines are priced more gently than many of the his peers. The 2010 is a startling success. Don't miss.

2010 Mignon Brut Nature

Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media: "Mignon's 2010 Brut Nature Blanc de Noirs Pur Meunier is fabulous. Bright, focused and energetic, the 2010 Pur Meunier is endowed with real class. The flavors are bright and focused, but it is the wine's multi-dimensional personality that truly stands out. There is a sense of verticality supported by beams of minerality that is simply compelling. This is the single finest Champagne I have tasted from Christophe Mignon so far. The 2010 emerges from parcels in Festigny and Le Breuil planted in 1976. Bottled with no dosage."
