Here Today, Gone Tomorrow
2018 Xavier Gérard Saint-Joseph Le Blanchard

Posted by Joe Salamone

Anytime that we offer Xavier Gérard's Saint-Joseph Le Blanchard, it sells out within hours.

It started with the 2014 vintage and will continue with the 2018.

The first time that we tasted Gérard's Saint-Joseph we were blown away by the wine's bright, complex aromatics and lifted elegance.

Gérard was introduced to his importer, none other than Neal Rosenthal, by the great Côte-Rôtie classicist Bernard Levet. Xavier Gérard is a young grower who took over his family's small domaine in earnest in 2012 and in no time has turned out incredibly elegant and traditionally made Syrahs and Viogniers.

The majority of Gerard's holdings are in Côte-Rôtie and Condrieu. His St. Joseph comes from Le Blanchard, a vineyard just south of Condrieu. In a good vintage, he makes a mere 2,000 bottles of the St. Joseph.

Le Blanchard is a fascinating expression of St. Joseph. It possesses an unusual finesse, agility, and perfume - elements that it shares with Cote-Rotie.

In the warmer vintages of 2017 and 2018, Le Blanchard has shown brilliantly. The lighter and more nervous style of the wine dovetails very nicely with the vintages. In the Northern Rhône, the 2018 carries a good amount of ripeness, but also a surprising verve.

The 2018 Saint-Joseph Le Blanchard delivers complex aromatics with beautiful precision. There are floral notes, spice, earth and dark fruits with nice freshness and energy on the finish. The combination of layered complexity, power and cut is really impressive.

There's an easy explanation for why Gérard's Saint-Joseph sells out each time we offer it. It's extremely appealing, honest Northern Rhône Syrah at a fair price. This is certainly the sort of offer that we could only sneak in on a Sunday. Please give us your ideal order and we'll try our best.
