Grand Cru in everything but price… 2016 Weingut Peter Lauer "Senior"

Posted by Joe Salamone

The perfection of proportion: is 2016 the ultimate purist’s vintage?

2016 may be one of the most explosive, most vivid vintages of “Senior” of the last few years. In terms of pure pleasure, there is something magical about the 2016. It has incredible vibrancy, transparency and energy.

Lauer’s dry Rieslings always have a stunning balance, but this vintage may be the most angelic. The 2016 “Senior” seems to almost float in the glass.

For all of the grandeur of the 2015 vintage, 2016 comes to the table with more humility - but do not confuse this humility for simplicity. What the 2016 vintage offers is simply profound transparency and poise. The 2016 “Senior” offers an almost tactile, crystalline sense of the terroir.

As we’ve written before, Lauer’s “Senior” has become a legendary staff favorite. It’s a bottle consumed by the case-load and cellared in quantity.

“Senior” is grand cru in everything but price. Sourced from ungrafted vines around 70+ years of age from Lauer’s top grand cru site (the Kupp), this is one of the greatest values in white wine, period.

The easygoing nature and vividness of the wine suggests it’s going to have a very long and very delicious drinking window.

In fact, as with most years, we’d love to declare this a “Back up the Truck” email, but we never seem to have quite enough wine. Lauer’s 2016 “Senior” has just arrived and unfortunately, we expect it to be sold out quickly. The wine is already sold out at the estate. If you are interested, please don’t hesitate.
