Defying Expectations : 2016 Clape Cornas Cuvée Renaissance

Posted by Ian McFadden

The 2016 Cuvée Renaissance is poised to be one of the best vintages of the wine that we've tasted in the past decade.

Clape is one of the benchmarks of Cornas, renowned for his bone-crushing and long-lived style.

The Renaissance bottling is intended to temper some of Clape's brutal intensity. However, in special vintages, the wine defies expectations and hits a jaw-dropping level of grandeur and mineral-laden architecture.

There's no doubt that 2016 is one of these vintages. It's a dream brew of lift, concentration and clarity.

The 2016 Renaissance is a dead serious bottle. It offers a pristine freshness and an ultra-clear expression of Cornas' granite slopes with a shocking amount of grip and length.

The wine is filled with dark fruit, herbal and savory notes, and flaunts a firm mineral streak. While there’s plenty of the muscle and intensity that we’ve come to expect from Clape, there’s also a sense of elegance and refinement.

We've been blown away by the 2016 Northern Rhônes. It's easily our favorite vintage since 2010. We love the combination of concentration, finesse, purity and minerality that the vintage offers.

The 2016 Renaissance's combination of density, verve and overall harmony bodes really well for how it will age. This is a really special vintage for the wine. Don't miss!
