Dazzling Classicism: 2014 d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets

Posted by Ian McFadden

In 2016, I made d'Angerville's 2014 Caillerets my wine of the year.

Almost two years later, I'm really pleased with the decision. The wine is beautiful. That's why I couldn't resist this small parcel.

It's not surprising. Caillerets is one of the unsung gems of Volnay and it's becoming clearer that the 2014 red Burgundies offer a dazzling classicism.

D'Angerville's Caillerets is a wine I seek out every vintage, but with only 0.7ha in Caillerets it’s always the hardest wine to lock down in quantity. It captures the racy, emphatically mineral side of Volnay with pinpoint precision and refinement.

2014 is a vintage that distills down so much of what I love about Burgundy. There's incredible clarity, subtlety and poise to the wines. In 2014, Caillerets' beauty is laid bare. It's the perfect vintage to catch the site's purity, stony minerality and outstanding length. The wine is a study in elegance and lift.

D’Angerville has supplied me with some of my most memorable bottles of old Burgundy. Given Caillerets’ track record for aging, I have no doubt this will be fascinating to watch evolve.
