Benchmark Chinon
2014 Baudry Chinon La Croix Boissée

Posted by Joe Salamone

I've been waiting a long time for Baudry's 2014 Croix Boissée to be released.

Croix Boissée is Baudry's top bottling. It always stands out for its refinement and age-worthiness.

Baudry is one of my favorite producers. I never hesitate to buy every vintage in quantity. Baudry's style is beautifully detailed, vividly transparent and refined.

In a vintage like 2014, it promises to evolve into something completely gorgeous. This is a vintage to go deep on.

The 2014 vintage produced wines of incredible length, poise and finesse. In the 2014 Croix Boissée, you sense a depth, harmony and completeness that really leaves you with the impression that this will be a great wine a decade from now.

La Croix Boissée is sourced from a hillside plot with limestone and clay soils on a chalk base. In Chinon, this terroir is home to the appellation's longest-lived wines. Baudry's Croix Boissée always comes across with exacting detail and pristine clarity. It's a wine that speaks deeply and shows a compelling soulfulness and honesty.

For the greatest expressions of Cabernet Franc in the Loire today, the list is short: Clos Rougeard, Baudry and Jérome Lenoir. It's worth noting that Baudry's Croix Boissée costs a fraction of what Rougeard's entry-level Clos currently trades at.

When it comes to building a cellar on a budget, Baudry's Croix Boissée is one of the first wines that I reach for. 2014 is the most exciting vintage that I've seen of the wine in some time.
