Beaujolais On Tip-Toe: 2017 Metras Fleurie Printemps

Posted by Joe Salamone

The 2017 Printemps is special.

Over the past handful of years, Printemps has snuck up on us as one of the most fascinating wines of the lineup.

Printemps has Métras' indescribable textural presence, with an added beautiful energy. It's the most dynamic wine of Métras' line-up

A few weeks ago, we opened a bottle of 2017 Printemps and the entire staff was blown away. The bottle was drained in a matter of minutes.

The amount of fineness and silken finesse that the 2017 offers was impressive. It had focus, length and a soaring presentation of minerality, floral notes and red fruits. The 2017 vintage in Beaujolais was less extreme than 2015 and 2009, but the vintage is a relatively ripe one. Thinking of it as a cross between 2014 and 2015 is helpful.

Métras' unique mouthfeel and streak of dark minerality are on bold display in this vintage. The ripeness of the vintage adds an extra dimension of complexity. It's animated by an invigorating backbone that Printemps really flaunts.

Printemps is Métras' young vine cuvée. Bear in mind that in Beaujolais, young vines aren't all that young. Printemps comes from vines which are a very respectable 20-30 years old, planted in top sites: Grille-Midi and La Madone. They are prime, steep and very sunny climats situated in sandy, pink granite soils that yield a very classically feminine style that's earned Fleurie the title "the Queen of Beaujolais."

Simply put, this is a dazzling vintage for Printemps and definitely one that you'll want to buy in quantity. It is delicious to a point that borders on addictive.
