A Vivid, Shocking, and Disorienting Perspective:
Beurer Sauvignon Blanc

Posted by Joe Salamone

Vatan, Cotat, Dagueneau, Boulay... and Breuer?

For us, there is a very short list of truly delicious and important Sauvignon Blanc producers.

The first four names above represent our personal favorites. We'd guess they also represent close to all of our Sauvignon Blanc emails over the last decade.

So today, we suggest that the simple (and outrageous?) fact that we are emailing you about a Sauvignon Blanc not from one of these producers - and a Sauvignon Blanc from Germany, no less! - speaks to the truly dazzling quality of this wine.

A Sauvignon Blanc for Riesling lovers? In a way, yes. There is a polished and sleek core of minerality, offering a certain mouth-watering refreshment, but also a focus and clarity. Yet, and this is the magic of this wine, it is also somehow a lavish, textural and fascinatingly complex wine that rifles through a dizzyingly diverse array of flavors, from ripe green citrus (lime candy, lime oils), to stone fruits and melon, to sweet green herbs (mint, sorrel), flowers, cut grass, lemon grass, hay, smoke and stones.

What makes this wine so fascinating is that it presents all of these flavors with ease, honesty, and graciousness.

This is a very serious bottle of wine - a wine that has a lot to say about what Sauvignon Blanc can be - yet it is just so perfectly proportioned and seamless that it is one of the most drinkable Sauvignon Blancs we've had in a long time.

So drinkable and captivating that we've decided, against all odds, to do an email on the small parcel that is available in the country.

It should be said that Jochen Beurer, the winemaker, is a cultish figure in Germany's wine scene. He was among the early practitioners of biodynamics in Germany and has built a large reputation on deeply complex and soulful wines - from Riesling to Trollinger to, yes... Sauvignon Blanc.

While it'd be a stretch to call this a cultish Sauvignon Blanc, the wine does have a big following. Pretty much anyone who tastes the wine gets obsessed with it.
