A Knockout Cornas:
2013 Clape Cornas

Posted by Ian McFadden

Every time that I've come across a well-priced offer for Clape's 2013 Cornas, I've jumped on it.

Today's offer represents a modestly sized parcel of the wine that I've managed to put together since our last offer in January.

It's easily one of our favorite vintages of Clape's Cornas in the past decade. Clape's intensely muscular style has a shocking amount of energy and detail in this vintage. Having tasted the wine multiple times, it's clear that Clape judged the vintage perfectly. He simply nailed it.

There's no doubt that you can find bigger blockbuster vintages of Clape than 2013. But you'd be hard pressed to find one with as much clarity, finesse and delineation. It's these qualities that we find so compelling.

In 2013, Clape's Cornas delivers a total package that really wowed us. You have the signature bone-crushing savory elements combined with incredible precision and verve. The interplay of all these elements creates a tension that makes it such an extraordinary vintage for the wine.

Few Cornas age the way that Clape's do. The wines undergo an amazing transformation in the cellar. Clape's Cornas evolves from being dense and powerful in its youth to something beautiful with surprising refinement.

With the 2013, everything seems to be in place for a Cornas that will age beautifully. I can remember few vintages of young Clape that are as thrilling as this one. I'm very happy to have one last opportunity to offer this wine.

2013 Clape Cornas

Jeb Dunnuck, The Wine Advocate: "Probably the wine of the vintage is Clape’s 2013 Cornas. Coming from some of the prime terroirs in this incredible appellation, it’s always 100% Syrah (Cornas is always 100% Syrah) that saw no destemming and spent 22 months in mostly ancient foudre. This wine offers up classic Clape notes of beef blood, cold steel, liquid rock, pepper and saddle leather (there’s fruit in there as well) to go with a medium to full-bodied, beautifully concentrated, rich, textured 2013 that has an awesome mid-palate, ripe tannin and clean, lengthy finish. It won’t be as long lived as some of the more blockbuster-styled years, but it will dish out incredible pleasure over the coming 10-15 years."
