"What a gorgeous wine this is"
Prévost Beguines Extra Brut (2013)

Jérôme Prévost has 2.2ha and an enormous following.

They are some of the most compelling and singular Champagnes out there. When you taste Prévost, an immediate obsession seems to develop.

The combination of tiny holdings and a cult following makes things ugly. Landing Prévost from any vintage in decent quantity is really hard. Allocations typically amount to a case or two.

When this parcel of Prévost's 2013 came across my desk, I jumped on it. The 2013 is a stunning example of the wine, and one of my absolute favorites.

Prévost's 2013 is electric, delivering a length and clarity of expression that captivate. Antonio Galloni's recent note really nails just how good the wine is: "it is the wine's energy and drive that elevated it to the highest level in Champagne." For lovers of Champagne and Prévost specifically, this is a vintage to go deep on.

We've drunk as many bottles of the 2013 as we could justify. We love its depth, cut and extraordinary saline and earthy minerality. Not to mention the lovely fineness and detail.

The rise of Jérôme Prévost is an unlikely story. At age 21 he inherited his grandmother's 2.2 hectares of old-vine Pinot Meunier in Gueux, an obscure area in the northwest of Montagne de Reims. For over 10 years he simply sold off the grapes. In 1998, his friend Anselme Selosse convinced him to start making his own wines.

In Prévost's Gueux, you find unique soils. Here, Champagne's famous chalky soils are buried deep under a mix of sand and calcareous clay, laden with sea fossils. Something really special happens to Meunier here.

We offered the 2013 in January and never expected to see the wine again. This parcel was a score and almost certainly the last chance to grab one of our favorite vintages of Beguines.

Antonio Galloni, Vinous Media: "Jérôme Prévost's 2013 Les Beguines is a worthy follow up to the superb 2012. This is an especially sculpted, crystalline vintage for the Beguines. The richness, power and depth are more implied rather than overtly stated. In 2013, the key word is: energy. There is no shortage of that here. Dried pear, herb, spice and wild flowers are nicely pushed forward, but it is the wine's energy and drive that elevated it to the highest level in Champagne. What a gorgeous wine this is."
