Showstopping:
Ulysse Collin Blanc de Blanc
Les Pierrieres Extra Brut (2012)

Posted by Joe Salamone

Ulysse Collin have always been some of the most singular and compelling Champagnes around. Recently, though, things have clicked into high gear.

The past few releases have been showstopping delivering a thrilling, mind-bending complexity.

Ulysse Collin is known for producing Champagnes of epic scale and riveting minerality. The 2012s are extremely and incredibly convincing examples of this. The 2012 in Champagne was a powerful, concentrated and high acid vintage.

Of the line-up, Les Pierrières offers the most precise, penetrating minerality and lifted elegance. In 2012, Pierrières has impressive depth and gripping presence married to energy, clarity and cut. It's a spellbinding combination.

Pierrières is a 1.2 ha vineyard located in the village of Vert-Toulon, an obscure area between Sézannais and the Côte des Blancs. In Pierrières, the chalk in the vineyard is extremely close to the surface and mixed with black silex. The unusual terroir lends a firmly pronounced chalkiness and a lovely, racy finesse to the wine.

By now, the story of Olivier Collin’s ascent is well known. After spending time with Anselme Selosse, he was inspired to take over his family’s vineyards, which were being rented out to a big maison. Selosse’s influence is certainly felt in Collin’s wines - they are some of the most mesmerizing and profound emerging from Champagne today. We encourage you to check out Olivier Collin's fascinating I'll Drink to That interview.

Finding Collin's wines has always been difficult, but with each passing year they become even harder to land in quantity. We're happy to be able to offer this modest parcel today. Please give us your ideal order and we'll do our best.
