2012 Bouchard Corton-Charlemagne 750s & Mags

Out of Bouchard's entire white collection, their Corton-Charlemagne is a wine that I think of as being very special.

I think this for two reasons - outright quality and outrageous value.

As much as I love Bouchard's Montrachet and Chevalier-Montrachet "La Cabotte," I always turn to the Corton-Charlemagne for offers because the value is so compelling.

Bouchard's Corton-Charlemagne is one of the smartest buys in the world of White Burgundy.

Corton-Charlemagne is one of the most epic of all the Grand Crus combining power, deep minerality and an incredibly ageworthy structure. Of course, this breeding and grandeur comes at a cost. The extreme example is Coche-Dury's Corton-Charlemagne, which goes for over $1,000 upon release.

Bouchard's 2012 Corton-Charlemagne is a tour-de-force. It's as massive as it is nervy and fine. Burghound nails it when he describes the "driving finish that is blessed with so much dry extract that it seems almost chewy... the balance is impeccable and the length is genuinely stunning."

The scale, the buckets of deep, layered minerality that the 2012 Corton-Charlemagne offers up is startling. The fact that it remains agile and finessed really highlights just how special this wine is in 2012.

This is one of the most awe-inspiring editions of this wine that I've tasted. Sadly, its intensity is at least part of the result of low yields. There's not much of this wine to go around and I expect that none will remain tomorrow morning.

Burghound: "There is enough reduction present to knock down the expressiveness of what appears to be a very ripe nose of apple and floral aromas. The broad-shouldered flavors are impressively rich, full-bodied and well-detailed with a taut muscularity on the highly persistent and driving finish that is blessed with so much dry extract that it seems almost chewy. Despite the imposing size and weight of this classically styled effort the balance is impeccable and the length is genuinely stunning."
