"Among the finest in the Côte des Blancs"
2004 Doquet Mesnil Blanc de Blancs

Mesnil is holy ground for Chardonnay. Few capture this as astutely as Doquet.

I always keep my eyes open for Doquet's vintage bottling from Mesnil. It can be frustrating to track down and when it finally does turn up, there are usually only a couple of cases available. The wines disappear before they ever hit the shelves.

The people who know Doquet devote themselves to tracking the wines down. They are expressions of Chardonnay that leave a deep imprint. Peter Liem calls Doquet "among the finest in the Côte des Blancs." That sums it up nicely.

Doquet has really impressive, perfectly situated parcels in Mesnil. The sites make up the backbone of Doquet's beautiful expression of Mesnil. Few wines from Mesnil deliver as clear and intense a version of the village's minerality and sheer class.

2004 is an ideal vintage to witness this. For the Côte des Blancs, 2004 was really important. Think of the successes like Taittinger Comtes de Champagne or Agrapart. The wines have an ultra-clear, super-fine minerality and a gorgeous rigor - exactly what I look for in Champagne.

The chalky minerality that dominates Doquet's 2004 Mesnil is expansive and enveloping. There are layers of smoke and crushed rock that mingle with stone fruits and gently toasted nuts. There is a tactile expression of minerality that accentuates the elegance and seamlessness of the wine.

Whenever I land a parcel of Doquet, I get excited. These are wines that need to be more widely known. You have top terroir, sensitive winemaking and a result that places it among the best examples around.
