24 Years Young:
1992 Lauer Riesling Sekt Reserve

Posted by Joe Salamone

Lauer’s late-release sparkling Rieslings have become the stuff of legend among Crush regulars.

There are few wines that showcase such a fascinating weave of maturity and freshness, of power and finesse.

It's been well over two years since the estate has released a new vintage.

This is a terroir-specific, vintage, méthode Champenois bottling from one of Germany's greatest producers (it's even hand-riddled) that has seen a near-quarter century of perfect provenance in the cellar.

And yet the parcel we can offer today comes with a price tag that puts it in the company of many non-vintage Champagnes.

The 1992 was bottled with no dosage and is perhaps the most complex, herbal and mineral of all the releases. This is Lauer's first "brut nature" late release, and it was disgorged only two months ago.

The nose is complex and savory, with an ultra-fine medley of green herbs brightened by citrus and an almost saline minerality. The palate is pure lightning - brisk, with a shimmering citrus and green apple. The acidity is still razor sharp, even after more than two decades of development.

We’ve worked with Lauer’s late-release 1990, 1991 and 1993 - the 1992 is perhaps the sternest of all the releases, but may also have the most potential. For this reason, we have included 6-pack pricing.

As you can imagine, quantities are limited. Lauer's late-release Sekt program is magical. As with all of these sorts of things, we see far too few releases, far too infrequently. We wrote the same line with the last release, but it bears repeating: Our advice is to take advantage of this while you can.
