85 and 97 Trapet Chambertin: Old School Grand Cru

Sometimes it's nice to offer a little something to drink now...

With La Paulée San Francisco coming up in just a few short weeks, back-vintage Burgundy has been on our mind (frankly, Burgundy is sorta always on our minds).

We figured it was time to pull out some of our older stuff and enjoy it.

Oldies but goodies indeed: Today we're doing a quick little offer focusing on the elegant, finessed side of Gevrey with a pair of lovely Chambertins from Domaine Trapet. 

Trapet is no-nonsense Burgundy; Gevreys of good muscle, though they are agile, sinewy, clearer and crisper than most. The Burghound has called them "Old School," "understated" and "elegant and refined" - we like that. We're always on the lookout for deals like today's and our track-record with older Trapet shows that you are, too. Fans seem to come out of the woodwork for it - this Domaine has a solid legion of fans that value authentic Burgundy at very reasonable prices.

Both the 85 and 97 offered today represent the only bottles in the country, and pricing is extremely sharp, particularly considering how beautifully they are showing right now.

We'll keep it short and sweet today, but the gist is that 85 is a great vintage - one of the best of its decade in fact - with the wines showing juicy, deeply colored yet still detailed fruit that's now softened into really pretty earth and animal notes. As the Burghound sums up perfectly, the 85 Trapet Chambertin is: "Lovely in an understated fashion."

As for the 97, it was certainly a riper vintage, yet Trapet's signature finesse maneuvered it well so that there are great, full aromatics along with the density of fruit and a good supporting tannic structure that's kept this vivid.
