We first wrote about the Fattoria Le Pupille's Morellino di Scansano last spring. I talked about how proprietor Elisabetta Geppetti (better known for her heavily-lauded, collectible Saffredi) is making some of the finest wines in Maremma, the strip of coastal land in southern Tuscany.
The response to that email was overwhelming, so on its heels, we tasted Pupille's Poggio Valente, a Morellino Sangiovese with a dash of Alicante and a distinct step up in terms of the quality and price level. Samples impressed the extremely particular Crush staff, who were all seen gently nodding to each other saying, "Really?At this price? Oh yeah - this definitely works."
While the Maremma is typically known for opulent, forward-style Sangiovese, the thing we found most alluring about the Poggio Valente was its refinement - even elegance - despite a lushness of fruit, glaze of soft spice and floral-touched structure that's part of the region's signature.
The delicacy and perfumed aromatics that Galloni mentions are exactly what makes it so incredibly versatile - with or without food, company, or even a "good" reason to have a glass.
We've taken as much as we could with visions of holiday parties dancing in our heads, but the fact that this is a first-rate red from one of the region's foremost winemakers and priced at half off tells us that this may well fly out the door faster than you can complete your seasonal shopping.
