Slate, Polished
2009 Schäfer-Fröhlich GG
Tim's Greatest Dry Riesling, Year in and Year Out...
LOWEST PRICE IN THE NATION

2009 represents Tim's most mature collection; if past vintages have been fierce and angular, there is a new-found elegance to the 2009 Felseneck...

...this is slate, polished to a glossy sheen.

The purity of 2009 has served Tim Fröhlich very well. When I visited him in late March of last year he was basically giddy - Tim believes this is his best collection to date.

The Felseneck is his greatest dry Riesling; it's the vineyard that gives him his most "complete" wine, his most ruthlessly mineral wine (Chablis fans take note). While the 2009 is crystal clear and wildly aromatic (like the stunning 2008s), it has more heft, a more saturating juicy-fruit presence on the mid-palate. It is also much more elegant.

With this collection Tim has seriously turned up the finesse of his wines - this Felseneck has soothing turns, incredible polish and poise.

This is one of the Germany's greatest dry Rieslings, year in and year out. Today, we offer out a small parcel, at the lowest price in the nation.

As full and ripe a vintage as 2009 was, Tim's 2009s, especially the Felseneck, carry this ripeness with incredible energy. Indeed, the idea of “zesting” comes up again and again when I taste this wine; texturally the wine is saturating, incredibly flavorful yet airy, light. It’s as if Tim takes peach, apricot with equal doses of slate, pulverized earth and flowers and zests it all together, in equal parts, into his wines.

Riesling-zest?

As good as this wine is, it's also a wine (hell, a collection) that I’ve become more and more excited about every time I've tasted it. First in Germany, then in the U.S. at an industry tasting and then again at a dinner with Tim – every single time the wines have been more impressive.

At this point, it's fairly well established that young Tim Fröhlich is making some of the top wines in Germany. Last year he won the Gault Millau's award for "Top Dry Riesling" and when I travel around Germany, and ask the winemakers whose wines they're excited about, nearly everyone mentions Tim.

While the elegance and finesse of this year's collection will, I think, endear Tim to long-time fans of Helmut Dönnhoff's dry Rieslings, I think the closest comparison remains the sculptural, majestic Grosses Gewächs of Klaus-Peter Keller.

And we know how easy those are to find.

This is a benchmark dry Riesling, a Teutonic treasure. Please give us your maximum order and we'll do our best - all orders subject to confirmation.
