1996 Raveneau Chablis Valmur
Five-Star Vintage, First-Class Producer, Few Cases Only

"A benchmark for the entire region."

That’s what Andrew Jefford calls "mature bottles" of Raveneau. Problem is, unless you've been collecting it for 20 years, very few are lucky enough to have mature Raveneau in the cellar.

Today we offer a tiny parcel of the epic, haunting 1996 Raveneau Valmur at $279.99.

Because of the rarity of this bottle, this offer is going out only to those of you who have supported our Chablis program. So we'll keep this email short and sweet...

The 96 Valmur is an epiphany right now. Here's John Gilman's tasting note from the View from the Cellar: "Scents of lemon oil, apple, a bit of pink grapefruit, intense minerality, floral tones and blossoming notes of paraffin make this a great nose. On the palate the wine is full-bodied, deep and laser-like, with a rock solid core of fruit, flawless structure, and profound length and grip on the snappy finish." There is little more we need to add.

The summer of 96 was sunny and dry with cool nights - all in all an ideal year for crystalline Chablis with outstanding aging potential, especially from Valmur, a cooler site that lends itself to intensely pure and delineated wines. As Jefford notes, “[Raveneau] is a domain where the shy magnificence of Valmur; its nervous, half-hidden fruits and flowers, its blue sky purity crossed by mineral vapour trails, reaches full articulacy.”

While the Clos may more often make the headlines, in great vintages, Raveneau's Valmur is legendary.

Absolutely stunning right now, there’s very little doubt that this still has another decade, at least, ahead of it.

Holding only 7.5 hectares in all of Chablis, Raveneau maintains just over a half-hectare of the Valmur Grand Cru, and the wines barely show up in quantity even upon first release. At this point, fourteen years into the swing of things, only two other shops in the U.S. have any of the 96 Valmur on hand, and between them not even a full case. We have secured a small, pristinely stored parcel of original cases of this wine. Suffice it to say that if you have any interest in this wine, now is the time to act.
