Outrageous Grand Cru Value - DRC's New Neighbors

If Corton hasn't gotten due credit lately, that will be changing soon thanks to the new kids on the block: DRC. The question is, how much longer will you be able to get a Grand Cru Corton for $70?

The answer is probably not that much longer.

And the reason is not only because DRC has leased parcels in Corton just down the path from Tollot-Beaut in Les Bressandes, Les Renardes and Clos du Roi.

Or rather, it's for the same reason DRC has moved into Corton: the wine, the soil, the potential.

Now, to be clear Tollot-Beaut is not DRC - yet, they have upped their game over the last decade and currently they are fashioning absolutely beautiful, red-ripe Burgundies with a sheen of purity and a "sumptuous" quality as Andrew Jefford says in The New France.

Writes Mr. Jefford: "the sweetly expressive Corton-Bressandes is the domain's pinnacle."

The price tag is, frankly, more than a bit shocking: $69.95 a bottle. This is one of those very obvious success stories with an even more obvious formula - really pure, lovely Grand Cru Burgundy for about the price of the big boys' village wines. We offered out a parcel of the 2006 and it was gone by the end of the day. We'd expect the same here, especially considering the stellar 2008 vintage.

Tollot-Beaut is based in Chorey-les-Beaune - this fact likely accounts for their relatively under-the-radar status. A big manor house in Vosne-Romanée does wonders to increase one's status and reputation. Yet this is real, very serious winemaking: no fertilizers, low yields, hand-harvesting.

In Bressandes, Tollot-Beaut cultivates vines that are over 50 years old, which turn out a Pinot with bold red berries, rich plum fruit and a mineral-packed structure that’s true to the site. The 2008 vintage contributed fantastic acidity that gives the Bressandes’ broad scale great freshness, drive and tension.

Tollot-Beaut's 2008s have the stuffing and structure to grow in the cellar - especially those from sturdier sites like Bressandes. Give this time if you can; if you can't, then decant.

We have only have a few cases to offer today so this email goes out only to the Burghounds out there. To order, please email us at offers@crushwineco.com or call the store at (212) 980-9463.
