Gevrey, in Silk Sheets
2007 Denis Bachelet Gevrey Chambertin VV
Minute Establishment; Mighty Reputation

Denis Bachelet's estate is tiny. So small that you can't find his wines in quantity. So small that there's very little of this to go around to his legion of fans - the decidedly fanatic, passionate following that hunts down his wines and proselytizes about him in the most astute of wine circles.

If you're getting this offer today, you're probably part of the following, probably already know how fantastic Bachelet's wines are. While we've finally secured a parcel of his outstanding 07 Gevrey VV large enough to email out, there's still not much here, so this is going only to those of you who have supported our Burgundy program.

Today we offer the 2007 Denis Bachelet Gevrey Chambertin Vielles Vignes at the very sharp price of $62.95 a bottle - compare-ats are as high as $90.

This is quite possibly one of the best of the 2007 red Burgundies in terms of both quality and value.

What can we say about Denis Bachelet? He's the cult producer of Gevrey with a HUGE reputation despite his having less than four hectares under vine. To make things even more in-demand, his vines are a wise and tightfisted 60-65 years old, and Denis is a staunch perfectionist when it comes to sorting his grapes. Clive Coates gives props to his results: "wines of intensity, great elegance, and subtlety; feminine in the best sense. They are concentrated, harmonious, pure and understated."

Yes, these are very much Gevrey - deep and toothsome and brooding and grippy... but they walk with an elegant, feminine gait - ridiculously, distinctly silken, seductive dark fruit with perfume, poise... and earth, and animal. There's a good helping of wood, but the wines have such deep concentrations that it's all very integrated, all a bit quietly profound.

This is a simple estate with just five Pinot bottlings, and while Denis' Charmes is for us without a doubt the best Charmes out there (apologies to Roty and Dugat-Py), if we were forced to pick a favorite of his, both in terms of quality and value, the Gevrey VV would be it, deep and provocative as it is... and as ageworthy.

We had a 90 Gevrey VV a few years ago at nearly two decades old, and it was simply beautiful. Not trying to be something more than what it is, but absolutely lovely in its confidence and class. Bachelet's 2007 is excellent right now, though it certainly packs the depth and the length to hold up, with spirit, for at least another five years - and probably well beyond that - in the cellar.

This wine has developed its own momentum - we've bought it, sold out, bought, and sold out again so many times it's almost embarrassing. Why didn't we just go long in the first place? Denis Bachelet is a phenom, and this may be one of the very best of the 2007s. I suppose the reason we didn't go long in the first place is because we couldn't find enough to do so.

While we finally have found a nice little parcel, there's still only a relatively small quantity available here. Give us your maximum order, and we'll allocate as best we can. To place your order, please email us at offers@crushwineco.com or call the store at (212) 980-9463.
