Austria OBSESSED - Exotic Refreshment: 2011 Christ Gelbermuskateller

Exotic Summer Refreshment
2011 Christ Gelber Muskateller
One Final Parcel for the U.S.

In the spring, we did an email on an awesome Gelber Muskateller (Yellow Muscat) - that quirky Austrian summer obsession - and it sold out immediately.

We've spent the rest of the summer trying to get more and here it is - one final parcel, only ten cases to battle the oppressive heat of August.

As we wrote before, Gelber Muskateller is one of the most unique and aromatic grape varieties out there. Try and imagine a light, vivacious, almost giddy white wine chock-full of orange rind and grapefruit, a touch of ripe apricot and loads and loads of sage and elderflower, you get the idea.

A good Gelber smells like a flower garden gone wild - with an orchard and a babbling brook in the distance. If this sounds like summer, you're beginning to get the idea.

While Italy's "Moscato" is the best known comparison, the signature Austrian Muskateller is not sparkling and it's totally dry. We think it's both more complicated, a bit quirkier, and also more refreshing, more memorable.

In the summer, it's impossible to walk down the rambling streets of Vienna's first district without spotting armies of bottles of Gelber Muskateller on the tables. In Grinzing, the picturesque wine-suburb on the northern edge of the city, you can almost smell the wine, the perfumes filling the air as you walk down the street.

As we said, this is aromatic juice.

And, to be fair, this is no ordinary Gelber - this is one of the absolute best. Rainer Christ is one of the greatest winemakers in Vienna and his Gelber Muskateller is our hands-down favorite.

It manages to contain all the kaleidoscopic complexity of a good Gelber, while remaining focused, balanced... crisp and refreshing. Of all the Gelbers we've tasted, only Nikolaihof's comes close to the freshness, the clarity of Christ's wine - and Niko's Gelber is $10+ more expensive.

So, with a lotta August ahead, here is one final chance to reload. If you're looking for something that is brisk and refreshing with personality, with a dazzling florality, Gelber Muskateller is your wine.

Give us your maximum order and we'll do our best. The wine is in stock and ready to go.
