"In a word: Sublime" - 2002 Bollinger La Grande Annee Rose

"Totally Impeccable and Classy"
2002 Bollinger La Grande Année Rosé
The Best Grande Année Rosé Ever?

"In a word: Sublime." -Antonio Galloni

2002 will go into the books, with 96, as the best Champagne vintage in the past twenty years - this much is already clear. Richness, power and clarity. This is something that only the greatest vintages achieve.

This is a vintage that plays to just about every strength of Bollinger and today we have a parcel of Bollinger's 2002 Grande Année Rosé which will prove to be one of the monuments of Rosé Champagne in this awesome vintage.

It seems destined to be one of the finest rosés this great house has ever produced.

It is also, in this rather rarefied world, considerably undervalued - consider Dom Pérignon's 2000 rosé at $300+, Krug's NV Rosé at $250. Even the more cult rosés, Selosse's NV Rosé clocks in at $250 or more, Philipponat's Goisses Rosé at nearly $400.

Our best guess is this pricing just won't hold.    In our opinion, when the next great Bollinger Rosé comes to market, the wine is likely going to catch $200+ on release.

Bollinger is known for their sexy, curvaceous, statuesque wines, but all of that would soon get boring without the great finesse the house also manages. As Champagne expert Peter Liem says, “Bollinger’s Champagnes are often known for their richness, but whenever I taste one, it’s usually its fineness that I notice first and foremost.”

And this is what Bollinger's Grande Année Rosé 2002 captures so beautifully... There's a powerful and concentrated intensity, but there's also a glowing finessed purity to the vivid notes of flowers, spice and minerals. There is a wine of thundering length and depth married to clarity and precision.

It's easy to see why Antonio Galloni summed it up in just one word -"sublime." Maybe that's all that needs to be said.

Antonio Galloni: "The 2002 Brut Rose La Grande Annee is a beautifully detailed, subtle wine. A noble, intriguing bouquet leads dried roses, berries, minerals all of which come together with gorgeous articulation. There is a wonderful balance between the vinosity of the Pinot and the more chalky, minerally elements that preserve freshness. The finish is totally impeccable and classy. In a word: Sublime. This is Lot L001831. Disgorged November 10, 2009."
