Tanzer delivers high praise here. Burghound isn't shy either with the compliments: "impressive."
Arnoux's own Pascal Lachaux calls 2008 a "miracle vintage." The best of this vintage came out rather backwards and ornery, yet, they have gained in stature, depth and purity with every passing month.
It will be interesting to see where the chiseled wines of this vintage finally get put in the general hierarchy. Clearly they have been and continue to be under-estimated - they are so pure with soaring aromatics of delineated fruit, flowers and minerals. And they remain the steals of Burgundy.
To put this value in context, 750s of Arnoux's 2010 Echézeaux are going for $275-310. Today, we offer magnums of 2008 for $299.95.
The value here is glaring and becomes even more so when you consider just how little Grand Cru (or any Burgundy) gets bottled in magnum. Unsurprisingly, these are the only magnums in the world.
Out of Arnoux's line-up, Echézeaux is one of those secret and silly values that cruises under the radar.
If Echézeaux can be a variable site with certain areas falling short of the "grand" epithet, rest assured Echézeaux at Arnoux is the real deal - uniformly old vines in the "Rouge du Bas "section of the Echézeaux, this is a prime lieu-dit at the peak of the slope. It's worth mentioning that the other standout Echézeaux from Rouge du Bas is Meo-Camuzet's excellent version.
The Arnoux estate has always been strong - their 78s and 93s are killer. However, the past 10 or so vintages have catapulted them to a whole new level of quality. Collectors have begun to chase Arnoux's wines down in a similar fashion as they go after Rousseau, Roumier, Bachelet, etc.
To be honest, there's probably not enough wine here to justify an offer - this is rare juice. However, they're just too cool not to offer. When it comes to aging,magnums are just better. Spend some time with importers and you'll notice tons of magnums in their cellars. Nothing ages quite as gracefully, nothing ages with more freshness than wine in magnum.
