THIS is Vosne-Romanée (Part II)
2006 Mugneret-Gibourg Vosne-Romanée
Lowest Price in U.S. by Nearly 20%

As we wrote before regarding Mugernet-Gibourg's Vosne-Romanée - "some bottles are just special."

And this is one of them.

We offered a small tranche of the 2008 Vosne in early August; it sold out some time just after noon, the same day.

Today, we have an even smaller parcel of 2006 Vosne-Romanée and if the quantities available and the sharp pricing barely make it worth while for us, at some point this is more a purchase of passion than of any sound business logic.

But it's worth it to us - few wines find a balance that is so deep and dark and mysterious, purple fruits interwoven with wild flowers and spice and dark soil, mineral... few wines combine a textural elegance, a feminine grace with such authenticity... such soul.

The 2006s, relegated to the shadows of the 2005s, have been for most of their young lives, misunderstood and mispriced. No, these are not the monster-wines that the 2005s will be, but they are vibrant, pure, fresh and crystal clear. In short: delicious. (The 2005 Mugneret-Gibourg Vosne, if you can find it, is a $100-wine, easily.)

For those of you who want to get technical: The parcels of vines from which they source their village Vosne-Romanée are within La Columbière, Champs Goudins and Le Pré de la Folie - sites which march together below the village and above the Route Nationale. As a matter of fact, these vines are literally in the Mugneret sisters' backyard.

If you want to get a bit romantic, you could suggest that the sites' proximity to "home" might account for the tenderness, the peaceful harmony this wine so obviously has (again, that indescribable something special).

As with the 2008, this is most likely "last call" for this wine - at least in any meaningful quantity and certainly at this price.

For those of you in love with Burgundy, in love with Vosne-Romanée, this is very worth having in the cellar... not to collect, but to drink.
