Is it wrong to start an email about Méo-Camuzet by talking about Henri Jayer?

If it’s not exactly fair to simply play off Jayer’s fame, it’s impossible to deny that icon’s lasting influence on the wines of Méo-Camuzet.

After all, Jayer worked portions of the Camuzet family’s vines for 42 YEARS, making his own wine from them until his retirement in 1988. And when it was time for Jean-Nicolas Méo to take over his family’s vineyards and domaine, he smartly sought the wisdom and guidance of Jayer. Today, Jean-Nicolas credits that lineage and Jayer's mentoring for much of his style and continued success.

But even apart from that, Méo-Camuzet has carved out a special niche for itself among the Burgundy elites. Clive Coates in Côte d’Or writes, “Even in Vosne-Romanée, where there is no lack of competition, it is among the top handful of leading estates.”

Due to all that, we’ll get to the point of the email: 2000 Méo-Camuzet Echézeaux at $169.95 a bottle.

You’ll be very hard-pressed to find many other GRAND CRU back-vintage red Burgundies at this price point, never mind a bona fide great. Just for comparison’s sake, the only other price on this bottle in the entire world is at $415 a bottle, which is admittedly a ludicrous price, but still, you get the point.

A quick note about the site: Echézeaux is one of those tricky Burgundy appellations. It’s huge and some areas perform much better than others. Méo-Camuzet’s is definitely one of the better - you could probably make that one of the best - parcels within Echézeaux. Most of the house's 0.44 hectares of vines are around 70 years old, and they’re all situated in the top portion of “Les Rouges du Bas” at the upper limit of the appellation - this is prime real estate at the top of the slope. Influenced by the lighter soil up in this section, the character of the wines here is strongly mineral, with rich fruit and bold structure checked by pronounced acidity freshness and finesse.

Combined with the pure vibrancy of the 2000 vintage, this is just hitting its peak drinking window, though ample time - another five to 10 years - will also be rewarded.

Allen Meadows, in his most recent tasting note for the 00 Echézeaux, points out, “the nose remains very fresh with spicy and ripe red and black berry fruit that merges into generous, rich and round middle weight flavors that are delicious, palate staining and long,” concluding that it’s “still on the way up.”

Our small parcel comes from a private collection in the northeast, just a few cases, still in original cardboard - perfect. Please give us your maximum order and we'll do our best. We expect a quick sell out.
