Forever immortalized by the 1976 Judgement of Paris tasting, Stag's Leap wines of the 70s and 80s represent a special time in Napa's viticultural history.
I have had many great wines from what some consider California's golden age.
These are wines from a different era... for those of you used to the high-octane, saturated wines of current-day California, these bottles will feel like they're from a different world.
This was a different Napa; a time before mailing lists and high-profile wine consultants. These wines were made by the pioneers who were really trying to prove to the world (and themselves) that California could compete with the great wines of Europe.
Stag's Leap Wine Cellars' founder and winemaker Warren Winiarski was one of those pioneers and today we offer you wines from the beginning of this legendary story.
It's impossible to overemphasize the perfect provenance of this collection.
Every bottle in this offer comes from a single-owner cellar - every bottle was purchased directly from the winery on release. They have slumbered in their cool, northern Californian cellar since.
It's hard to find older Californians with a provenance this pristine. Unlike great Bordeaux and Burgundy, which have always been collected and treasured, these wines were not widely collected and cellared when young.
Honestly, we are lucky to see these today and are proud to offer them at incredibly reasonable prices. There are some serious values to be had.
Warren Winiarski started Stag's Leap Wine Cellars in 1970 and enjoyed early success after working for California greats such as Lee Stewart at Souverain Cellars.
The real breakthrough for the winery came after the famous 1976 Paris tasting when the 1973 Stag's Leap was judged to be the best wine among a number of French and California wines, including First Growths Haut Brion and Mouton-Rothschild. This event is generally considered to be one of the most important moments in California wine history.
Sadly there is no 1973 in this collection today, but there are still many great wines from the terrific years that followed. Obviously the Cask 23, Lot 2 and the SLV Cabernets are the famous bottlings and are very much worth the entry fee. But not to be overlooked are the regular Napa Valley wines as well as the Petit Sirahs - both are terrific examples of the history of Californian wine at very reasonable pricing.
