"The 2009 Châteauneuf"-du-Pape blanc may be the finest white wine I have ever tasted from Clos des Papes." - Robert Parker

Vincent Avril has taken over the Clos des Papes estate from his father, Paul, who passed away in 2009, and if anyone ever questioned his ability to uphold the very high standards Paul set forth for this house as well as this region, the above quote should offer great evidence in the affirmative.

Vincent made the soaring 09 Clos des Papes blanc on offer today, which Robert Parker calls "stunning white Châteauneuf" and which also offers evidence that this is one of the most overlooked categories of classic wine.

These are utterly unique whites that curve and flow and caress the palate with hedonistic bouquets of honeysuckle, bowls of ripe stone fruit tossed with lavender, fennel spice and a citrus glaze.

The best ones, like today’s 09 from Clos des Papes, also maintain incredible intensity on the palate. This particular cuvée from Clos des Papes actually never goes through malolactic fermentation, which means there’s a shock of acidity that lends great freshness and lift here, complicating the whole show and furthermore assisting this wine’s ability to age.

While this is beautiful right now and doesn’t require additional cellaring to achieve its full potential, Parker also rightly points out that “the wines have an uncanny ability to age for ten or more years in many vintages.” White Châteauneuf is one of those wines that morphs dramatically and beautifully as it ages: In youth, these are full of big, intense and vibrant fruit, and as they age they become more mineral, softer, more about seductive texture.

I believe that with proper cellaring, this will certainly carry through the better part of a decade, revealing the exotic, signature secondary notes of Rhône whites that allude to smoky autumn leaves, crushed rocks and even white truffles.

There’s just a small parcel of this wine available to offer out today, so I’m going to keep this short and sweet. We urge you to order quickly, as there's not a lot to go around, and our pricing, at $88.95, is the lowest in the nation. This email is going out only to those of you who have supported our Châteauneuf program.

Robert Parker: "The 2009 Chateauneuf du Pape blanc may be the finest white wine I have ever tasted from Clos des Papes. An equal part blend of every authorized varietal in Chateauneuf du Pape (six different grapes), it exhibits terrific fruit intensity, lots of quince, anise, nectarine and white peach notes, a full-bodied mouthfeel, terrific purity, a hint of honeysuckle and a layered, long finish. This stunning white Chateauneuf du Pape should drink nicely for 3-4 years, possibly longer. The malolactic is always blocked in this cuvee, and the wines have an uncanny ability to age for ten or more years in many vintages."
