Cedric Bouchard's Val Vilaine has to be one of the fastest moving sparklers ever to grace Crush. We first wrote about it two years ago, right after Antonio Galloni wrote: "Readers should do whatever they can to experience these magnificent wines."
If you're reading this email, you followed his instructions. That initial email sold out in less than 24 hours, and our five or so subsequent offers have all followed suit. Each time, we've sought out more, but this is an artisanal production, and you all are a thirsty following. Today's offer goes out only to those of you who have supported our grower Champagne program before.
The story today is that Bouchard's 09s were just released, but we found one last parcel of the 2008s, which are fantastic, so we jumped on it, and today we offer it at $51.95 a bottle, which also happens to be the lowest price in the nation currently.
Bouchard's wines are always released early, and they need some time in bottle (as well as in the glass) to open up fully, to really show off, which is partially why the 2008 is showing so superbly right now: explosive, full of flourishes and opulence yet at the same time so, so impressively detailed in its expression of crisp fruit, a giant bouquet of wildflowers and minerals.
This blanc de noirs flaunts all the power, richness, exoticism of the Pinot grape, begging to be swirled and sniffed, almost like a Burgundy... but it somehow manages this with a simultaneous precision and wild intensity that could only come from such a quality freak as Bouchard.
The Val Vilaine site (about 1.5 hectares, still owned by Cedric's father) is farmed organically; yields are kept absurdly low and, like all of his wines, this is fermented using only native yeast in stainless steel tanks. It is bottled unfined and unfiltered with no added dosage.
As always, this is an outstanding deal for grower Champagne from this one-man operation with barely enough vineyard holdings to make 500 cases. These are SO intensely focused on quality and the expression of terroir, the pricing is just nuts.
