Billaud-Simon airily calls their Vaillons a wine of celebration. But they're underrating it. This is Vaillons with classic Chablis raciness, density and finesse - call it "serious" fun... at a serious value.

Today we offer the 2006 Billaud-Simon Premier Cru Vaillons.

To quickly bring this into sharp focus: The only other pricing in the nation for any 06 1er crus from Billaud-Simon is nearly $50... for Mont de Milieu. Today we have the first-class premier cru Vaillons at over 35% off that price.

For the quality of the wine, this price is ludicrous. Alas, this is one single parcel: when these bottles are gone, so is this pricing.

For those of you who do not know Billaud-Simon, or have heard of them but never tasted, this is one of the top estates in the region. There is an obvious kinship, stylistically, with the wines of Raveneau and Dauvissat. If they never quite reach the extreme density and nuance of those wines, they are similarly round and luscious while remaining exceedingly elegant, clear and light.

They are also, especially today, exceedingly more affordable than those giants!

Winemaker Bernard Billaud calls his 06s "very tender and rich with excellent maturity." It's true: These manage to be lacy and buoyant, yet also dense and packed with juicy, exotic fruit - this is a really satisfying bottle of wine to drink right now. (Burghound's notes are below.)

The bright ripeness and supple richness of the 06 vintage in Chablis make for an impressive juxtaposition with the clarity that Billaud-Simon achieves in this wine. Break out the oysters, the corn chowder, the summer heat - this is their perfect match.

That said, the juiciness and buoyancy of this wine right now should not overwhelm the fact that this wine will age beautifully in the short term.

Chablis deals like this don't come around often - and we have only a few cases of this wine, so if you haven't yet had a wine from Billaud-Simon, today's almost outlandishly low pricing offers a perfect entry-point.
