Jancis Robinson has wisely commented: "The best red 2001s may not be ultra-powerful but they are ultra-pure, great expressions of vineyard character, their finely etched flavours nicely defined by lively acidity."
We like this sort of red Burgundy, very much.
The 01 Drouhin Charmes is a most tender Grand Cru expression of the muscular and often boisterous commune of Gevrey. It's the Grand Cru with the least amount of bravado, the least swagger, yet there is something so very charming about Charmes in its own context. This is a feminine and graceful expression of Gevrey, a wine that whispers, yet what it whispers is very, very seductive: A pitch-perfect expression of fresh red fruit, a perfume that is in equal parts fruit, flower, mineral, animal, earth.
For us, this commune, this vineyard and this vintage are all perfectly in line with what Drouhin does best: Purity, finesse, clarity. Philippe Drouhin and enologist Laurence Jobard called the 01 vintage "a pleasant surprise" and opined that Gevrey-Chambertin was, as Allen Meadows agrees, "perhaps the best commune of all in 2001."
This wine is killing it, softly. Grand Cru in the fineness, the extraordinary detail, the purity and glide, though priced among (and in some cases below) the 1er Crus. For $75 a bottle on a three-pack, this offer should be very thought provoking for the serious Burgundy fan.
And how often does your Burgundy buying-dollar get you immediate gratification? Here, the drinking window has just opened, with the still-fresh fruit just now starting to express its full, detailed, perfumed potential. This wine will continue to show beautifully for another 3-8 years, but we welcome you to open a bottle and listen, now.
