When will the great 1er and Grand Cru Burgundies of 2005 be ready?

This is the million dollar question, and as you count past your fingers and toes, and the conversation veers (once again) to discussions of "future legends," let's bring the future to the present with one of the first 2005s we've come across that is beginning to bloom, unfurling to show the incredible depth and raw material of this famous vintage.

This, ladies and gentlemen, is but the first preview performance of 2005, and it is an awesome show indeed. Take a look at your cellar: If you missed the great village wines of 2005 the first time around, do not make the same mistake again. We're not usually so bold, but today we say: Hit "reply" now.

At age five, the 2005 Drouhin Vosne-Romanée is a textbook example of why this village has the fame and incomparable name-recognition it does.

More than that, the spicy red-fruited elegance of Vosne beautifully aligns itself with the jewel-box clarity of Drouhin's style, the incredible presence of the fruit, its density, compactness, and energy. This 2005 Vosne-Romanée is a perfumed treasure chest of juicy red fruit, bright spices and cool minerals melding into almost perfectly-integrated tannins.

Drouhin adroitly manages a balance of delicacy matched with plenty of supple, mid-palate weight. In classic Drouhin style, there is nothing exorbitantly flashy about this wine - just a really gorgeous, pure expression of one of Burgundy's greatest villages. 

Though this is a "preview presentation" coming into full swing, expect the "swing" to be grand and long. This is but the first flower - that first thrilling sprout of fresh green - from a wine that will offer exceptional drinking and enchanting, honest pleasure over the next five to ten years.

For those of you lucky enough to already have some quantity of 2005 1er Cru and Grand Cru stashed away, consider this: The more 2005 village Burgundy you have, the less likely you'll be to open the 1er and Grand Crus prematurely!
