We know very well there are some serious "Burghounds" out there, though please keep in mind that La Paulée is as enriching for the novice as it is for the traveled scholar of Burgundy (and everyone in between). There are two events that I especially recommend - the "Grand Tasting" and the "Gala Dinner," both of which are slated for Saturday, March 13th.
The Grand Tasting
This is the more "formal" tasting, with all the growers pouring a selection of their wines largely focusing on the 2007 vintage. Expect a full lineup from basic Bourgogne, through Village, 1er Cru and up to Grand Cru. Many growers will be on hand, pouring their wines and answering questions.
For those who really want to compare and contrast, to analyze the style of one grower next to the other, to absorb the signature of the vintage, there is really just nothing else quite like this tasting - aside from maybe traveling to Burgundy and spending a week driving around and visiting the growers.
While this is not an inexpensive event, the breadth and depth of the La Paulée experience is simply incomparable.
Quite frankly, at La Paulée Burgundy becomes a bit more intelligible, more fascinating, more rewarding while losing none of its soaring beauty and majesty. I can't recommend this event enough, please see below for all the details. (Photo copyright Thomas Schauer)
The Gala Dinner
That same night, after a small respite from the tasting, the growers and Burgundy lovers from around the world will reach into their personal cellars and come to the Gala Dinner, fully stocked with some of the greatest Burgundies ever made. This is the premier and most widely anticipated "BYOB" dinner in the world!
This is where the legends come out to play, where you can rub shoulders with some of the most extraordinary bottles from the last century. Those of you who have been won over by the siren call of Burgundy, this is one of those watershed events.
While the Burgundy on the table will be formidable, expect nothing less from the food. Host Chef Michael Mina, Chef d'Honneur Daniel Boulud and Michel Troisgros will be be presiding over the menu, along with "Rising Star Chef" Corey Lee of the soon to open Benu, and Jason Berthold of RN74. Rest assured this will be the very best in wine and in food.
